BASIC VALUES AND PRINCIPLES OF CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING

Catholic social teaching is founded on the idea of an Ordo Socialis, a judicious social order. Traditional Catholic social teaching revolves around four cardinal principles. These are the principles of personality, solidarity, subsidiarity and the common good. The more the legal and market order are aligned with these principles, the closer – from a Christian perspective – the political and economic reality will come to realising the ideal of social and individual justice.

PROMOTING A CULTURE OF PEACE - SOCIAL CONCERNS IN CHRISTIAN ETHICS

At the same time religious leaders have made repeated calls for promoting a culture of peace wherein warring parties can lay down their arms – and prejudices – to build a brighter future for their children. It is in this light that we can examine six social concerns in promoting a culture of peace, which also constitute the foundations of a Christian ethical framework.

AUSTRIAN PHILOSOPHY – THE PRIDE OF NOT ONLY THE AUSTRIAN NATION

In these coming two days, you will be dealing with thinkers, and their ideas, which originated in a relatively small geographical area, in and around present-day Austria. From the 1920s and 1930s, many of these thinkers moved away from Austria, to global centers of learning, and of political and economic power; and in the case of all the philosophers you will deal with, their ideas moved around the world.
